What is Twitter?

"Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service(SMS) or external applications." - Wikipedia

Questions which arise from Twitter:

  • Why has twitter gained so much popularity over other microblogging features like facebook/myspace updates, and even instant messenging services like AIM, MSN, or even chat room clients like IRC?
  • What are the positive/negative effects of twitter on democracy?
  • What effect does twitter have on social capital today?

Viral Twitter Project:

I was thinking about doing this as my final project for the class, but how about we try and make a trend on twitter?

Interesting article about trending and twitter - http://news.buzzgain.com/how-many-tweets-does-it-take-to-be-a-trending-topic-on-twitter/

If we want to do this, we should shoot for prime time, and a trend that lasts for more than 24hrs. The data in that article is a bit old and of course it varys on if anything going on, but we need to get over 2000+ tweets from over 1000 users to get up to trend status. Honestly, it does not seem that hard.

I have a crazy idea to launch a viral campaign which will encourage people to RT the topic...The only thing is, PETA may be after us for doing it...Anyone interested?

As long as we don't actually harm whatever we "hold hostage".

*Readings we are going to recommend for required reading*

Hey guys, I wont be near a computer to post the readings, so will one of you post the final agreed links/readings? - Keith

I know what articles I would use, most were mentioned in our meeting, but what do you think would be the best ones?

Summary from our meeting:

Post about Twitter and Politics (iran conflics), about Twitter Expansion, influences, and effects...Chuck Tryon had some good articles....Get em posted by tomorrow night, have a great weekend!

*Update*

I went ahead and posted the articles that we discussed in the Schedule of Readings section. I think I got all of them, but if I missed one or there's a better article for our purpose then edit away! -Joe

Also, in the "also section" I think we should show these links:

http://twitnest.appspot.com/nest/index.html - Explore your network reach. See how far your network goes and who knows who.

http://socialcollider.net/ - reveals cross-connections between conversations (cool visualization)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddO9idmax0o A video for those not so familiar with Twitter.

(could use a good power-user video, watched a dozen or so, but couldnt find a decent  "how to benifit from twitter" video
